What the Job Involves

As part of Somerset’s centralised AMHP service based in Taunton, you will play a critical statutory role in Mental Health Act assessments, operating within a 24-hour hub model. You will coordinate and undertake assessments across Somerset, ensuring timely, lawful, and person-centred support. In collaboration with health, police, housing, and social care partners, you will promote least restrictive options, balancing complex situations and managing risk. The role requires participation in a 24/7 rota, including out-of-hours Adult Social Care activities.

Skills

  • Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification
  • Substantial experience in a mental health setting
  • Strong working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and associated laws
  • Knowledge of Human Rights Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Care Act
  • Ability to apply legal reasoning and make defensible professional decisions
  • Experience with multi-agency assessments and managing complex risks
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work both autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams
  • Must have full access to a vehicle for work purposes
